Laws of the Nations Are Corruption

‘And it came to be, when Shemu’ĕl was old, that he made his sons rulers over Yisra’ĕl. And the name of his first-born was Yo’ĕl, and the name of his second, Aḇiyah, rulers in Be’ĕrsheḇa. But his sons did not walk in his ways, and turned aside after own gain, and took bribes, and twisted right-ruling. And all the elders of Yisra’ĕl gathered together and came to Shemu’ĕl at Ramah, and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a sovereign to rule us like all the nations.” But the word was evil in the eyes of Shemu’ĕl when they said, “Give us a sovereign to rule us.” So Shemu’ĕl prayed to יהוה. And יהוה said to Shemu’ĕl, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from reigning over them. “According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Mitsrayim, even to this day – forsaking Me and serving other mighty ones – so they are doing to you too. “And now, listen to their voice, but you shall certainly warn them, and shall make known to them the ruling of the sovereign who does reign over them.” And Shemu’ĕl spoke all the words of יהוה to the people who asked him for a sovereign, and said, “This is the ruling of the sovereign who does reign over you: He shall take your sons and appoint them for his own chariots and to be his horsemen, and they shall run before his chariots, and appoint commanders over his thousands and commanders over his fifties, or to plough his ground and reap his harvest, or to make his weapons, and equipment for his chariots. “And your daughters he is going to take to be perfumers, and cooks, and bakers. “And the best of your fields, and your vineyards, and your olive-trees he is going to take and give them to his servants. “And a tenth of your grain and your vintage he is going to take and give it to his officers and servants. “And your male servants and your female servants and your best young men and your donkeys he is going to take and use for his own work. “A tenth of your sheep he is going to take, and you are to be his servants. “And you shall cry out in that day because of your sovereign whom you have chosen for yourselves, but יהוה is not going to answer you in that day.” However, the people refused to listen to the voice of Shemu’ĕl, and said, “No, but let a sovereign be over us. Then we shall be, we also, like all the nations, and our sovereign shall rule us and go out before us and fight our battles.” And Shemu’ĕl heard all the words of the people, and he repeated them in the hearing of יהוה. And יהוה said to Shemu’ĕl, “Listen to their voice, and make them a sovereign.” And Shemu’ĕl said to the men of Yisra’ĕl, “Each of you go to his city.”’

‘Why do the nations rage, And the peoples meditate emptiness? The sovereigns of the earth take their stand, And the rulers take counsel together, Against יהוה and against His Messiah, and say , Let us tear apart Their bonds, And throw away Their ropes from us. He who is sitting in the heavens laughs, יהוה mocks at them. Then He speaks to them in His wrath, And troubles them in His rage, saying , But I, I have set My Sovereign on Tsiyon, My set-apart mountain. “I inscribe for a law: יהוה has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have brought You forth. Ask of Me, and I make the nations Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth Your possession. Break them with a rod of iron, Dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ ” And now, be wise, O sovereigns; Be instructed, you rulers of the earth. Serve יהוה with fear, And rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Chosen, lest He be enraged, And you perish in the way, For soon His wrath is to be kindled. Blessed are all those taking refuge in Him.’

“And notwithstanding this, Nimrod did not return to Yahuah, and he continued in wickedness and teaching wickedness to the sons of men; and Mardon, his son, was worse than his father, and continued to add to the abominations of his father. And he caused the sons of men to sin, therefore it is said, From the wicked goes forth wickedness. At that time there was war between the families of the children of Cham, as they were dwelling in the cities which they had built. And Kedorla’omer, king of Eylam, went away from the families of the children of Cham, and he fought with them and he subdued them, and he went to the five cities of the circle of the Yardan and he fought against them and he subdued them, and they were under his control. And all the inhabitants of Mitsrayim and its wise men did so, and it was made a law in Mitsrayim. And they made Riqayon Phar’oh prefect under Oswiris king of Mitsrayim, and Riqayon Phar’oh governed over Mitsrayim, daily administering justice to the whole city, but Oswiris the king would judge the people of the land one day in the year, when he went out to make his appearance. And Riqayon Phar’oh cunningly usurped the government of Mitsrayim, and he exacted a tax from all the inhabitants of Mitsrayim. ‘Then there came to יהושע scribes and Pharisees from Yerushalayim, saying, Why do Your taught ones transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread. But He answering, said to them, “Why do you also transgress the command of Elohim because of your tradition? “For Elohim has commanded, saying, ‘Respect your father and your mother,’ and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ “But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me has been dedicated,” is certainly released from respecting his father or mother.’ So you have nullified the command of Elohim by your tradition. “Hypocrites! Yeshayahu rightly prophesied about you, saying, ‘This people draw near to Me with their mouth, and respect Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. ‘But in vain do they worship Me, teaching as teachings the commands of men.’ ” And calling the crowd near, He said to them, “Hear and understand: “Not that which goes into the mouth defiles the man, but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles the man. Then His taught ones came and said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees stumbled when they heard this word?” But He answering, said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted shall be uprooted. “Leave them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both shall fall into a ditch. And Kĕpha answering, said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.” And יהושע said, “Are you also still without understanding? “Do you not understand that whatever enters into the mouth goes into the stomach, and is cast out in the sewer? “But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and these defile the man. “For out of the heart come forth wicked reasonings, murders, adulteries, whorings, thefts, false witnessings, slanders. “These defile the man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man.”’

‘Therefore, when Pilate heard these words, he brought יהושע out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. ‘Festus therefore, having come to the province, three days later went up from Caesarea to Yerushalayim. And the high priest and the chief men of the Yehuḏim informed him against Sha’ul, and they begged him, asking a favour against him, that he would send him to Yerushalayim – making a plot along the way to kill him. Then, indeed, Festus answered that Sha’ul should be kept at Caesarea, and that he himself was about to set out shortly. Therefore, he said, “let those who have authority among you go down with me and accuse this man, to see if there is any fault in him.” And having spent more than ten days among them, he went down to Caesarea. And on the next day, sitting on the judgment seat, he commanded Sha’ul to be brought. And when he had come, the Yehuḏim who had come down from Yerushalayim stood about, bringing many and heavy charges against Sha’ul, which they were unable to prove, while Sha’ul said in his own defence, “Neither against the Torah of the Yehuḏim, nor against the Set-apart Place, nor against Caesar did I commit any sin.” But Festus, wishing to do the Yehuḏim a favour, answering Sha’ul, said, “Do you wish to go up to Yerushalayim and be judged before me there concerning these matters ?” And Sha’ul said, “I am standing at Caesar’s judgment seat, where I should be judged. To the Yehuḏim I have done no wrong, as you know well enough. For if indeed I do wrong, or have committed whatever deserving death, I do not refuse to die. But if there is none at all in these matters of which these men accuse me, no one is able to give me up to them. I appeal to Caesar.” Then Festus, having talked with the council, answered, “You have appealed to Caesar? To Caesar you shall go!”’
