Sha’ul Taught His Followers that יהוה Arbitrarily Decides When to Have Mercy
‘What, then, shall we say? Is there unrighteousness with Elohim? Let it not be! For He says to Mosheh, “I shall favour whomever I favour, and I shall have compassion on whomever I have compassion.” So, then, it is not of him who is wishing, nor of him who is running, but of Elohim who shows favour. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this same purpose I have raised you up, to show My power in you, and that My Name be declared in all the earth.” So, then, He favours whom He wishes, and He hardens whom He wishes.’

‘And I thank Messiah יהושע our Master who empowered me, because He counted me trustworthy, putting me into service, me, although I was formerly a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and an insulter. But compassion was shown me because being ignorant I did it in unbelief. And the favour of our Master was exceedingly increased, with belief and love which are in Messiah יהושע. Trustworthy is the word and worthy of all acceptance, that Messiah יהושע came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am foremost. But because of this I received compassion, so that in me first, יהושע Messiah might display all patience, as an example to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.’

‘“And when the Son of Aḏam comes in His esteem, and all the set-apart messengers with Him, then He shall sit on the throne of His esteem. “And all the nations shall be gathered before Him, and He shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates his sheep from the goats. “And He shall set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the Sovereign shall say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the reign prepared for you from the foundation of the world – ” for I was hungry and you gave Me food, I was thirsty and you gave Me drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in, was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you visited Me, I was in prison and you came to Me.’ Then the righteous shall answer Him, saying, ‘Master, when did we see You hungry and we fed You , or thirsty and gave You to drink? And when did we see You a stranger and took You in, or naked and clothed You ? And when did we see You sick, or in prison, and we came to You?’ “And the Sovereign shall answer and say to them, ‘Truly, I say to you, in so far as you did it to one of the least of these My brothers, you did it to Me.’ He shall then also say to those on the left hand, ‘Go away from Me, accursed ones, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his messengers – ” for I was hungry and you gave Me no food, I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, was naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’ “Then they also shall answer Him, saying, ‘Master, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not serve You?’ Then He shall answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, in so far as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ ” And these shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into everlasting life.’

‘And one of the scribes coming near, hearing them reasoning together, knowing that He had answered them well, asked Him, “Which is the first command of all?” And יהושע answered him, “The first of all the commands is, ‘Hear, O Yisra’ĕl, יהוה our Elohim, יהוה is one. ‘And you shall love יהוה your Elohim with all your heart, and with all your being, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first command. And the second, like it, is this, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other command greater than these. And the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one Elohim, and there is no other besides Him. “And to love Him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the being, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbour as oneself, is more than all the ascending offerings and offerings.”’

‘“And as you wish men should do to you, you also do to them in the same way. “And if you love those loving you, what favour have you? For sinners, too, love those loving them. “And if you do good to those doing good to you, what favour have you? For even sinners do the same. “And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive back, what favour have you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. Rather, love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting none in return. And your reward shall be great, and you shall be sons of the Most High. Because He is kind to the thankless and wicked ones. “Therefore be compassionate, as your Father also is compassionate.’

‘And replying, יהושע said, “A certain man was going down from Yerushalayim to Yeriḥo, and fell among robbers, who, both stripping and beating him, went away, leaving him half dead. “And by a coincidence a certain priest was going down that way. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. “And likewise a Lĕwite also, when he came to the place, and seeing, passed by on the other side. But a certain Shomeroni, journeying, came upon him. And when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. And having placed him on his own beast, he brought him to an inn, and looked after him. “And going out on the next day, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Look after him, and whatever more you spend I shall repay you when I return.’ “Who, then, of these three, do you think, was neighbour to him who fell among the robbers?” And he said, “He who showed compassion on him.” Then יהושע said to him, “Go and do likewise.”’

‘For everyone who is exalting himself shall be humbled, and he who is humbling himself shall be exalted. And He also said to him who invited Him, “When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, nor your brothers, nor your relatives, nor your rich neighbours, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid. “But when you give a feast, invite poor ones, crippled ones, lame ones, blind ones, “and you shall be blessed, because they do not have to repay you. For you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.’

‘So speak and so do as those who are to be judged by a Torah of freedom. For the judgment is without compassion to the one who has shown no compassion. And compassion boasts over judgment. My brothers, what use is it for anyone to say he has belief but does not have works? This belief is unable to save him.’

‘By this we have known love, because He laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his tender affections from him, how does the love of Elohim stay in him? My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.’

‘But you, beloved ones, remember the words spoken before by the emissaries of our Master יהושע Messiah, because they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own wicked lusts. These are the ones who cause divisions, not having the Spirit. But you, beloved ones, building yourselves up on your most set-apart belief, praying in the Set-apart Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of Elohim, looking for the compassion of our Master יהושע Messiah unto everlasting life. And show compassion toward some who are doubting, but others save with fear, snatching them out of the fire, hating, even the garment defiled by the flesh. And to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you blameless before the presence of His esteem with exceeding joy, to the only wise Elohim, our Saviour, be esteem and greatness and might and authority, both now and forever. Amĕn.’
